What is an Expository Writing?
‘Expository’ is a synonym of ‘explanatory’. An expository essay or article, thus, is a piece of writing that explains or informs. It is supposed to be based on fact and free from the writer’s prejudices. Opinion is usually expressed, but only if it is backed by fact. For instance, if someone asked one to write an essay on the causes of World War II, you would write about Germany’s losses in World War I, the Treaty of Versailles, the fall associated with the Weimar Republic and the rise of Hitler led Nazism. To phrase it differently, everything could be according to verifiable fact – an expository essay.
The writing that is expository is devoted to four activities:
Generate a rough idea or hypothesis.
Find evidence to back this idea up.
